A lot of Filipinos experience denture problems, resulting to loss of joy and confidence in performing daily activities such as eating, smiling, speaking and socializing. Dr. Danny Magtanong of the Philippine Prosthodontic Society said that over the years, there has been a stigma attached to wearing pustiso mainly because a lot of embarrassing mishaps are associated with wearing dentures.

Even in a recent study, it was revealed that 9 million Filipinos wear dentures, making the Philippines the country with the highest incidence of denture wearers in Asia.

To create awareness about its metro-wide advocacy campaign promoting proper denture care among Filipinos and help denture wearers regain the confidence to eat, speak and smile, Polident, a product of GlaxoSmithKline, unveils a first-of-its-kind installation on May 14, 2015, at the Palacio de Maynila in Malate, Manila.

The installation is part of “Take the Polident Challenge!” campaign which will run a series of educational activities in Metro Manila such as free denture consultations and fun denture torture tests like corn-eating contests and videoke contests.

Towering at 30 feet, the inflatable installation depicts a giant denture biting onto a corn cob to highlight the physical tortures experienced daily by denture wearers, which according to dental health professionals are part of bigger emotional and social problems.

“Wearing dentures is difficult and what Polident aims to do is take away the worry that it would move, fall out, and cause embarrassment. Dentures should not take away the fun out of enjoying their favorite food or singing like their favorite idols. Polident thus challenges denture wearers to do their everyday activities like eating, speaking and smiling with confidence,” says Isa Marfori, GSK Polident product manager.

The Polident installation was inaugurated at the Rajah Sulayman in Malate, Manila on May 15-17. Other schedules are on May 22 to 24 at the Plaza Miranda, Quiapo, Manila and on May 29 to 31 at Tutuban Market.

Dentures 101
Inadequate dental care, accidents, or simple ageing --- all these may cause a person to shift to wearing dentures to fill in their missing teeth. But just like natural teeth, dentures require a lot of care to prevent bacteria from building up on the surface, to prolong their life, and to make sure they fit well and are secure in the mouth.

In the Philippines, one out of nine Filipinos in the major urban areas wear dentures, or about nine million people. A recent study also showed that the Philippines has the highest incidence of denture wearers in Asia. Majority are in the thirty five to sixty nine year-old age group, with eighty four percent residing in Metro Manila, nine percent in Metro Cebu and six percent in Metro Davao.

Polident, a line of denture care products by GlaxoSmithKline, shares some simple tips in caring for dentures to prevent discomfort brought about by trapped food, denture movement, and unnatural appearance, and allow the wearer to always eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Brush your dentures using denture cleanser only. Clean your dentures as you would with natural teeth, but use a toothbrush and cleanser specifically made for dentures.

Polident Denture Cleanser is designed to clean dentures daily with its anti-abrasivity properties which regular toothpaste does not have. While toothpaste works best for natural teeth, Polident Denture Cleanser works best on dentures because it’s free of abrasive chemicals that create holes on the dentures’ surfaces. Furthermore, many toothpaste brands contain bleaching chemicals that cause damage to dentures and whiten its pinkish portion. Polident Denture Cleanser is formulated to clean dentures daily and to kill 99.9 percent of odor-causing bacteria.

Handle with care. Dentures do not come cheap. To preserve them, clean your dentures over a sink full of water or a folded towel for protection in case you accidentally drop them. Do not use regular toothpaste on dentures to prolong its life. When not in use, dentures must be stored in a clean, dry place out of reach of children or pets.

Watch out for changes in fit. Because of daily wear and tear, dentures loosen. Poorly fitting dentures can cause sores or a burning pain in the mouth or gum area. You can also get abdominal gas from excess swallowing of air. If you feel that your dentures are starting to fit poorly, have them adjusted by a dentist.

Give your dentures a break. It’s good to give your mouth muscles a break by removing your dentures before going to bed at night, preferably for about six to eight hours. This prevents the gums and mouth from getting abrasions. Soak your dentures in either warm water or a special denture cleaning solution while on break from them.

Polident Adhesive Cream helps secure dentures properly and seals off gaps to stop food particles from getting into dentures. Applying Polident Adhesive Cream on dentures once a day helps fasten it securely for up to twelve hours.

Polident Denture Cleanser, on the other hand, is formulated to clean dentures, remove stains and kill 99.9 percent of odor-causing particles. Many denture wearers use regular toothpaste to clean their dentures which should not be the case. Toothpaste contains abrasives that scratch dentures, leaving small holes where bacteria can collect and grow. Toothpaste also contains bleaching chemicals that may damage the dentures and whiten its pink portion.

  1. You know, a friend of mine told me the American Academy of Implant Dentistry is having Dental Implant Courses in Cancun. He was blown away by the facilities and the skill of the dentists there. Cutting-edge and state of the art, that’s what he said. You won’t believe how much do dental implants cost there… They only charge $1,200 USD for the whole implant and abutment+crown (all imported FDA approved materials). They must be doing something right if the AAID trusts them so I’m going at the end of the year during my holidays. I can’t wait to bite an apple again. Atte: dental implant vacations
