Discovering Corregidor

Looking for something adventurous yet educational for your family or just for yourself this summer? Discovering Corregidor must definitely be on your list. Lying at the borders of Cavite and Bataan of Manila Bay, this tadpole-shaped island is for its beauty and historical value. It was named that way with the same meaning of the Spanish words "to correct". During Spanish occupation, ships containing documents for correction are sent in Corregidor. Surprisingly, Corregidor is part of Cavite and not Bataan.

Upon arriving on the island, we immediately rode a special tram bus with our very humorous and fun guide, Armando. Historical tours are usually boring but Armando made it very informative and fun. We tour the island for five hours.

Lights and sounds show inside the Malinta tunnel is also part of the tour but you have to pay an extra hundred pesos if you’re only in day tour because it is not included but completely optional.  Malinta The tunnel is where more than 2,000 Japanese soldiers died due to bombing. It is called Malinta because there are so many leeches there back then. Linta is a leech. Japanese soldiers would rather die by their own hands than to be killed by their enemy, American soldiers.

Here are the places to see in Corregidor which is also part of the Day Tour:

Long Barracks, Cine Corregidor, Pacific War Memorial Dome & Eternal Flame of Freedom
Middle side:
Filipino American Friendship Park, San Jose Chapel & Corregidor Hotel
Bottom side:
Gen. Mc Arthur Park, San Jose Chapel & Corregidor Hotel
Tail End:
Filipino Heroes Memorial, Pres. Manuel Quezon Park, Pres. Sergio Osmena Park & Japanese Garden of Peace

And it has a lot of activities to offer aside from the usual Corregidor historical tour and impeccable scenery. A perfect place to shoot photos. Photographers haven.

Bird watching has now been added as a worthwhile activity on the island. Commune with nature and be one to spot what could be migratory or resident birds of the island.
  • Rock Balancing - Corregidor, also known as the "Rock" boasts of unique rocks called "bloodstones". These rocks have been aptly called so because they are white in color with nice splatters of red. Rock balancing is an ephemeral art (short-lived art masterpieces) that has recently been introduced on the island. This is a natural activity that aims to boost eco-tourism and build awareness on nature conservancy. Rock balancing is often linked to photography and landscape art.
  • Zipline - the 40-foot high 655-foot long free-fall cable ride stretches from the Corregidor Inn all the way to South Beach.

The beautiful island of Corregidor is now being preserved for tourism and academic purposes. There are no residents in the place, only the employees and their families. Everybody is welcome to explore the beauty and wonder of the island. It is also known for ghost-hunting activities where you don’t really need to hunt one, one is already waiting for you inside your hotel room. Hehe!

Corregidor historical day tour will cost you Php 2,500.00 for a day tour with a buffet lunch via Sun Cruises.

The the beauty of the island is undeniable - you will feel like you're too far from manila when in fact it's just an hour away. But the value and terror it brings to people upon knowing the history and stories of it will still be the main reason why people not only here in the Philippines should visit the island. In fact, until now there are still mysteries and stories that are unknown and untold.

Our tour is made possible by Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) under their Chief Operating Officer Mr. Mark Lapid. Thank you!

P.S. I lost all my files of this tour, the reason why I had very limited photos. :(
